New to Giralda, I see. Well, it takes all sorts around here. Take that shifty-eyed weasel by the fire.
Oh, he acts looks like a simple merchant, peddling meager wares, but watch what you say around him. The Empire’s got ears everywhere...
See those two there? They seem all chummy now, but that’s only because Var is trying to convince Jarek to desert the navy in Thisbē and join
those lawless bastards who sail from the Spice Isles. I’m sure that one will kill the other before the week is out, once they’ve got what they want from each other.
Then there’s always the usual mercs; bastards who’d happily kill their own mothers for a coin. Oh, they say those twins from Brelan aren’t so bad,
but a merc is a merc, and money is all they see.
At least there're no damned elves here tonight. One got uppity last month when I insisted the
bastard slept in the stables. A damn generous offer for a half-breed, if you ask me!
Mind yourself if you head into the Wilds. It’s full of things that
would happily eat you and shit you out without a second thought. Even the people who hunt those things are more beast than civil.
Anyway stranger,
what'll it be: a room, or a drink?

CURRENT MONTH: AUREL, 762
This month marks the transition from the scorching sun of summer to the cooling of autumn. The night skies become more magnificent as shooting stars are more frequent, and auroras dance across the horizon. Aurel is a time of harvest when the farmers gather the crops that cannot withstand the upcoming heavy rains of Nandir.
December 2023 Soft hiatus - have a safe, warm, and minimally dysfunctional holiday season!
October 2023 Site month change! New threads (unless set in the past, future, or an AU) should be dated "Aurel 762". See the Information tab for a description of the month. Characters in the Temple Crew should be mindful of the continuity of possible injuries, connections made, relationship changes, increase in wealth, etc. as much as possible as this is set after the campaign.
June 2023 Happy Pride! 🌈

She can summon light, sometimes at will, sometimes not. Balls of it, wisps of it, her very hands and body can glow with the white-hot heat of it. If she were to grow more advanced with it, she could shape it into weapons and defend herself with the blazing blades and arrows. However, the more light she creates, the more her energy is sapped, taking and taking until she can hardly stand. As a novice, she can only just barely control it, and tries her best to keep it suppressed. During cloud cover or storms, she has a much harder time drawing upon it, and it takes significant energy.[break] [break][break] INVENTORY[break][break] [break][break]✹ FUTURE MAGIC ITEMS[break]
Subtle Satchel: Looking in this satchel, it will appear empty until the user says a certain passphrase. Unfortunately, the magic is fickle, and sometimes the passphrase cycles between past phrases. One day, it might be "bluebell crown", and the next, it could be "long noon shadows".

[break][break] STORY[break][break] [tw: death, violence, mild gore][break][break] ✹ CHAPTER 1 | 7 years old[break][break] Your father would have killed you if he knew. You know this, because he killed your sister for what she’d done. For what she didn’t mean to do. There was so much death that day, so much blood that you still feel it in your sleep. You feel it when you wake. Sometimes mud feels like it. Warm water does too. You can never forget being bathed in it. [break][break]
Your sister was a beautiful baby, eyes as gray as midnight clouds lit by the moon. From the hour of her birth, she was long-limbed and graceful, pale hair as clear as glass, so pale you could almost see through to the soft skin beneath. Her voice was high and sweet as a birds song—and with sharp claws to match, manifesting from nothing.[break][break]
Your father was a sensible man. Harsh, perhaps, but no one questioned your father when he set your baby sister out to die, far from your town, far from where you mother lay dying her insides torn and bleeding. She held you and your big brother, bled on you, and you held her back, until her blood was cold. [break][break]
Magic is frightening, you realize that day. Magic is deadly. Magic was never meant for our world, your father said, and of course you agreed, though the war had been ended and the elves returned to their own places before you were born. Magic should have gone with them, he said. You must all cast out the magic born among you, before it can turn on its family. And so he left your sister on that hillside in the wilderness, and he never looked back. [break][break]
You did. You crept out before dawn to see if some magic had come to reclaim your sister. It hadn’t, but some wild animal had. You tried to piece her together. More blood. You sobbed, and it was all you could take. You turned and ran for home, telling no one where you’d been. [break][break]
You told yourself your family was lucky that time. Only your mother died, not all of you. Your father is a sensible man. [break][break]
But the memory of your sister’s bones, cracked and bloody in the moonlight, haunts you still. The memory of your mother’s embrace of gore and trembling carries you still. [break][break] ✹ CHAPTER 2 | 12 years old[break][break] The night your brother left, the moon was full and the stars are bright. That light had illuminated his tear-streaked face as he slips quietly into your room. You reach for him, but he draws away, and he grips the necklace he always wears—a sharp obsidian stone, carved into the shape of a wolf tooth. You drift back to sleep, thinking you’ve only dreamed it, but when you wake in the morning, Felix is gone with three of father’s horses.[break][break]
“He knew the rules,” your father says when he fails to return with the stolen horses. You search his face for some hint of the grief he must feel and find a tightness around his jaw and eyes, nothing more.[break][break]
You do your own crying along in the dark, where no one can see. Why would Felix leave without telling where he’d gone? You would have gone with him, to the ends of the earth. You’re good with a knife and a bow. You’d have kept watch for him, tended the horses, done whatever else he needed.[break][break]
But he’s gone. Day in, day out, you endure your father, weather his anger, and wait for Felix. He never comes back. [break][break]
There comes a day when you carry water into the barn, and the empty stalls strike you like one of father’s angry blows. You empty the bucket into the remaining horse’s stall, topping off her trough. Tears are streaking, and everything hurts, and you have never felt more alone. You throw the half emptied bucket.[break][break]
Light flashes off the flying water. The light turns bright and clear, and it rushes at you. It seeps into your skin. White-hot light tumbles around you, flowing like water into your outstretched hands.[break][break]
“No!” You stagger back and try and shake it away. The wisps of light that came free burn the hay. Panicked, you stomp at the fledgling flames. Your hands are glowing now, and you can’t breathe—you rush for the horse’s water and plunge your hands within, and the water steams. Magic has found you. You are cursed.[break][break]
“Sunjata.”[break][break]
When you look over your shoulder, your father is standing in the barn’s opening, watching you. [break][break]
✹
[break][break] Your memory skips this. You don’t want to remember this part. All you remember is white, and white, and white.[break][break] ✹ CHAPTER 3 | 18 years old[break][break] Bergast can be pretty at night, you decide. Tall buildings, masoned rock from the not-so-far mountains, an ocean glittering under the moon . The streets are cobbled and a little uneven in places, but you like the sound of horses' hooves clomping on them. The street lamps create a flickering path for you along the winding road, and it’s all so picturesque that it brings a smile to your face in spite of your circumstances.[break][break]
Because you’d been running for five years. First from the farm and all that transpired there. Then from Ulcaster, from that boy you loved when you were fifteen—you can never forget his screams of pain, his horror, his fear after you’d burned his arms to the bone for what he tried to do. It was an attack on his life, his powerful mother had said, so you ran from there too.[break][break]
And after two years spent here, you run again. This time, you don’t deserve what you got. This time, it’s big, and it isn’t your fault—it’s Jekka’s. She took you into her crew, mothered you, taught you survival… and theft. You got to be a really good thief. And she saw your magic, saw the first time your emotions seized you and light poured from you, hot and harsh. She looked at you like you were magnificent, not terrifying.[break][break]
You can see it now. She had been using you. She coveted your magic, not you. Melting locks became your job, when the magic worked, anyways. It’s hard to summon, but you do your best for her. Anything for her. [break][break]
Even send her into a rival gang’s home base for a scroll you know nothing about.[break][break]
You didn’t know that you outlived your usefulness. You didn’t know that she had grown tired of your failed attempts, your accidental burns. You became a liability. You became expendable. [break][break]
✹
[break][break]
You can still hear the screams as you stumble outside the building. Your body is unraveling into white-hot light. The world is blinding and bright and too fast. Every breath feels like you are inhaling lightning. You are everywhere and nowhere. [break][break]
What happened, what happened, what happened? You can’t piece it together as you race from the fire, from the guards and crewmen who know it was you. But was it you? What have you done? [break][break]
Everything is white, white, white, white— [break][break] ✹ CHAPTER 3 | 21 years old[break][break] You have been running for years now. No one recognizes you, not really. You’d been bathed in light so bright, even you hadn’t been able to see. You’ve found honest work that keeps you on the move, delivering messages internationally with your ever faithful stallion. You keep your magic carefully hidden, working hard at training yourself into suppressing it. It had never done you any good.[break][break]
You know it was a set up. You know that Jekka sent you into that building to burn it to the ground and take the blame. She knew you could never resist trying to help the poor kids trapped into drug production. She knew your emotions would get the best of you, and that you would take the fall. [break][break]
And you know that Jekka has taken over that cruel underground empire in Bergast. You know, too, that her rival survived, a corrupt major official called Crys Barrow. You’ve done your research, kept your ear to the ground. You keep your finger on that pulse, knowing he’s out there, and he would cut your throat with joy.[break][break]
And… you know Felix is out there somewhere too. You search for him in your travels, always. [break][break]
