After sixteen years of living with a cruel, violent father, Felix disappeared, reluctantly leaving his kid sister behind. Home life had been harsh. His mother and baby sister’s death when he was eleven left its mark well enough, and his feather was sure to widen that wound day in and day out. He was tired. He couldn’t do it anymore.

He knew what he needed to do. He trained those horses in the barn himself. He and Sunny had a gift, mother once told him. Sixteen years old, he could make a living for himself training horses. But Sunjata. He couldn’t take her with him. He could fail. He could end up on the street with nothing, a vagabond with nothing to his name, no food to put in his sister’s belly.

He’d come back for her, he decided, and left with three of the horses. He sold two of them, a mare and gelding, in exchange for a stallion to breed with the remaining mare, and so began his efforts to begin his career in training and selling horses. His success was more than he could have hoped—as years passed, he became sought after, his horses top of the line. Finally, at nineteen, he decided to return home and fetch his sister, to give her a better life.

He found desolation. The farm had been burned to the ground and overgrown. He found the skeleton of a grown man in the barn, charred and cracked. His sister or her remains were nowhere to be seen.
