New to Giralda, I see. Well, it takes all sorts around here. Take that shifty-eyed weasel by the fire.
Oh, he acts looks like a simple merchant, peddling meager wares, but watch what you say around him. The Empire’s got ears everywhere...
See those two there? They seem all chummy now, but that’s only because Var is trying to convince Jarek to desert the navy in Thisbē and join
those lawless bastards who sail from the Spice Isles. I’m sure that one will kill the other before the week is out, once they’ve got what they want from each other.
Then there’s always the usual mercs; bastards who’d happily kill their own mothers for a coin. Oh, they say those twins from Brelan aren’t so bad,
but a merc is a merc, and money is all they see.
At least there're no damned elves here tonight. One got uppity last month when I insisted the
bastard slept in the stables. A damn generous offer for a half-breed, if you ask me!
Mind yourself if you head into the Wilds. It’s full of things that
would happily eat you and shit you out without a second thought. Even the people who hunt those things are more beast than civil.
Anyway stranger,
what'll it be: a room, or a drink?

Crowned Ibak are a very common animal, adaptable to most environments, and breed at a rate that could rival rabbits. These deer-like creatures are frequently farmed and hunted for their meat. The Crowned Ibak has a multitude of horns on its head. They don’t get taller than four feet and they sport a light brown/pale grey colored coat with a white underbelly. They can also have stripes, dependent on age. Their furs are the most commonly used for winter clothing and underarmor, and their horns are frequently fashioned into a multitude of wares. Goblins, in particular, favor Ibak horns for weapons.
Kaimma
Uncommon ❖ Threat: Medium
Kaimma are Giraldan elephants. Often rising to nearly 15 feet tall (some reports mention bull males of over 20 feet), these massive, intelligent animals are now found only in Thisbē. They are used both as heavy cavalry on the battlefield and to help with industry - especially logging. Their dried dung is often used for fueling fires for extended periods of time and is even exported. So important is their role that wild Kaimma are incredibly rare, most of them having been pressed into some sort of service. With their deep, almost mournful calls they can be a creature of beauty, but on the battlefield they make an imposing sight, able to trample enemy infantry and cavalry with ease. Grey skin and long tusks make the Kaimma a sight to behold, and they are held in great reverence by many of the population.
Rock Wolf
Common ❖ Threat: Medium-High
With it's powerful jaws and heavily muscled shoulders the Rock Wolf is a sight to make anyone stop in their tracks. Having forelegs that are longer than it's back legs gives the Rock Wolf a strange gait, but it can still move quickly when it needs to. Many a traveler has died with the Rock Wolves' gibbering laugh ringing in their ears. While they’re known as Rock Wolves, these cackling carnivores are not related to wolves at all, but rather a more robust member of the hyena family. Ranging anywhere in Giralda with open ground and plentify prey, these beasts often weigh up to 225 lbs. A lone Rock Wolf is unlikely to attack a traveler who is alert and aware, though lone Rock Wolves are rare indeed. They live in packs, ranging from 4-7 in the Northern parts of Giralda, and up to 20 in the warmer southern parts. Equally happy to hunt or scavenge, small packs of these creatures can be found across Giralda - though, mostly in rocky plains or low hills.
Dire Wolf
Uncommon ❖ Threat: High
One of the most well known, but sadly uncommon beasts, is the Dire Wolf. These animals have been around Giralda since what is assumed to be it’s inception, but have disappeared from many territories over the years. Averaging about seven feet from nose to tail, these large dog-like creatures are very intimidating and should be taken as a serious threat. Thankfully, Dire Wolf packs are smaller in number and the creatures are much more sinister in groups. Though some stories mention Dire Wolves leading great packs of grey wolves, no such claims have been verified. Many have attempted to domesticate Dire Wolves, but most times these experiments have failed.
Pharanx Cat
Invasive ❖ Threat: Medium
Originally imported from Tharsis, these non-native cats have flourished in the jungles and warmer forests of Giralda. After several escaped, the Pharanx Cats found themselves top of the food chain and are considered something of nuisance in more populated areas. These horn-eared cats are a little larger than bobcats and their fur is typically white and grayscale. Smaller juveniles can be seen leaping and chasing birds, while the larger adults can be found stalking the various small deer and even some reptiles. Attacks on people are not unheard of, but decidedly rare as they prefer more submissive prey.
There are many living reptilian species in Giralda that are considered to be Dragon Kin. True Dragons, however, have not been seen for centuries and many have come to believe them to be purely mythical. Oral traditions telling of dragons trace back well before the founding of Giralda. According to the legends, these huge creatures were intelligent and could be truly vicious. The stories passed down tell that at least some dragons could speak and earned nicknames such as "The Deceiver" and "Cold Flame", and claimed these creatures to be anywhere from 40 feet long to over 110 feet. A few large bones have been discovered throughout the lands, but scholars debate as to if these creatures ever truly existed.
BASILISK
Common ❖ Threat: Medium
Basilisks can be found on Damakos and the larger Spice Isles. Much larger than Marine Dragons, the Basilisk has a bulky body (averaging between six and fifteen foot from snout to tail) and an immensely powerful tail which they use to great effect to propel them through the water. They’re equally at home on the rocky shores or, if domesticated, on the decks of a ship. They are commonly seen basking in the warmth of the sun and consume a wide variety of prey, including: fish, seals, Marine Dragons, smaller sharks, and even people. They have a thick hide, especially the larger specimens, with some of the largest able to shrug off an arrow at anything further than close range. They are capable of a surprising burst of speed. Basilisk eggs are highly sought after by pirates and naval captains alike; as once tamed, Basilisks will fight fiercely to defend the crew and vessel.
Marine Dragon
Common ❖ Threat: Low
Marine Dragons are fiesty little reptiles. They usually don’t grow much larger than 2-3 feet from snout to tail. Their bodies are long, narrow, and flexible. Their scaly skin typically ranges in blues and greens, but have been seen in all manner of color. Marine Dragons prefer warmer climates, and can be found throughout the archipelago and Damakos. Marine Dragons have wings that are mostly vestigial, allowing for about as much flight as a chicken, nor are they particularly useful for swimming. They are fairly lazy creatures, often found dozing on the beaches or (in the case of tamed ones) on the decks of ships. If an egg of a young hatchling is taken, it is possible to more-or-less domesticate the creatures. They are little use in combat, however, and are mostly taken for the sheer novelty. Meanwhile, islanders largely consider them to be reptilian vermin.
WYVERN
Rare ❖ Threat: High
With a number of threats throughout the forested mountains and the highlands, Wyverns are a serious cause for concern. Believed to be a close cousin to True Dragons, these beasts have a savage demeanor and intense physical strength. Though they are often times considered to be unintelligent creatures, their mental capacity should not be mistaken for a great weakness. They are on average seven feet tall and fifteen feet long with a twenty foot wingspan. Despite their size and shape, the Wyvern are skilled at blending into their surroundings due to their coloring. Most are dark green or brown, with the ability to tuck in their wings to appear smaller and more compact amongst the trees. Though they are rare, Wyverns have been known to prey on farming animals and other small to medium sized creatures. These beasts have little fear of humans, and despite their lowered mental capabilities, have managed to figure out the difference between armored and unarmored potential victims.
These creatures are the reason Orcs tend to have a bad reputation in Giralda and beyond. Their genesis occurred during the Cataclysm, turning civil Orcs into brutish, barbaric monsters. The vast majority of their kind continue to dominate the Wilds of Giralda, however they can be found infesting just about anywhere outside of the safe confines of a city. Feral Orcs have something of an animal-like intelligence, having lost the capacity for higher thinking. They retain some basic language skills, are clever enough to make and use tools, and can even make crude armors - though, they typically just scavenge from the dead. These creatures tend to travel in large packs, often governed by some sort of Alpha. Feral Orcs, though simple-minded, should not be underestimated. They are deranged berserkers with an insatiable thirst for blood. Adventurers beware.
Harpy
Uncommon ❖ Threat: Mid-High
Harpies are repulsive, vicious creatures believed to have been created during the Cataclysm. Though primarily scavengers, they are fiercely territorial and will not hesitate to attack anything that does not give their nesting ground a wide berth. Harpies tend to be about the size of a petite human woman, rarely growing to be taller that 4 feet. Their heads are bulbous with stringy hair, their skin is colored like desiccated flesh and intermittently scaly, and they possess deadly talons on their hands and feet. Though sharp as a blade, the real danger of harpy talons is the bacteria; a blood-drawing scratch can quickly turn fatal if left untreated more than a few hours. Flight is their greatest advantage, but Harpy screeches have been known to stun victims and even burst ear drums. Harpies favor rocky terrain, especially cliffsides or dry ravines, and live in flocks of up to 20. Their nests are typically made of bone, food waste, and excrement.
Goblin
Overpopulated ❖ Threat: Medium
For centuries, misbehaving children across Giralda were sent to bed early with promises that the Goblins would grab them in their sleep and take them away to live as prisoners in their underground dens or eat them alive. These tales were mostly exaggerated, as these small creatures are much more likely to avoid those who tower over them. Goblins are simple beings and live off the land. They are known to wear furs and wield primitive weapons made of horn and stone more often than a more modern looted iron weapon. Numbers are their greatest advantage. They live in great clans - sometimes hundreds in size - and are not averse to raiding smaller human settlements or waylaying lone travelers. While small and craven, when pushed to fight, Goblins can be tenacious fighters and more than one town has suffered for underestimating a Goblin war party.
Elcor are the most common eating fish on Ertho. They are extremely plentiful, easily caught, and variants of elcor can be found in nearly any body of water that is capable of hosting life. Striped elcor favor Giraldan waters and tend to be a little larger than salmon, with pale blue flesh instead of bright pink. Elcor have several sharp teeth for eating smaller fish. Their jade colored eggs are a favorite summer delicacy among the middle classes and goes especially well with mead.
Lirien
Uncommon ❖ Threat: Low
According to elders in Giralda, the Lirien is a large sea monster that has an intensity to rival most others in the water. Lirien have the ability to camouflage themselves around any potential predators or threats - which are few - by utilizing color and light to make themselves appear smaller. This monster also utilizes this skill to hunt its prey, playing with it for a while before it finally attacks. Lirien can grow to a length of fifty feet long and can weigh thousands of pounds before reaching adulthood. They can be found in most bodies of water surrounding Giralda, but don’t often bother themselves with the likes of human-sized meals. Lirien are mostly interested in food and hunting, but if perturbed they will fight back. These creatures are aggressively territorial toward each other and are rarely seen with another outside of mating and raising young.
Great Serpent
Rare/Unknown ❖ Threat: Low-High
The Great Serpent haunts the oceans of Ertho. There is not much known about these large beasts that lurk in the depths of the sea, but they are seen more often in warmer waters. The seamen and those who are out for long periods of time have seen the creatures enough times to dispel any ideas of them being pure myth, and have reported them to be between thirty and sixty feet long. Some say they have reached up to eighty feet, but as they are rarely seen, it is hard to know the truth about their mass. These creatures have been said to take down entire ships, though little evidence supports these claims, and they tend to keep to themselves.
Hydra
Myth? ❖ Threat: Unknown
Having never had a confirmed sighting, it is hard to say what the Hydra is truly like. There have been reports of its immense size, hostile demeanor, and razor sharp sets of teeth - but all of this is left to the imagination. From supposed sightings, Hydra have been said to have as few heads as two but as many as seventeen. They each operate individually, which can be quite chaotic both for the creature and its prey. When severed, it is believed that Hydra are able to very quickly regenerate two heads in place of the original. Those who claim to have actually seen a Hydra in the sea have also described are typically dismissed as having found a school of Great Serpents. Believers claim Hydra swim similarly to a water snake, grazing the surface of the water when they emerge from the deep.
Tettigar are flying insects, famous for their medicinal properties. They look like a cross between a common tree roach and a cicada, with bioluminescent eyes, and grow to a wide range of sizes - the largest reportedly being the approximate size of a rabbit. Tettigar are plant detritivores and tend to be nocturnal tree dwellers or live in caves with ample vegetation. They can be found almost anywhere on the mainland. Most of their lives are spent underground as fat larvae, which are an excellent source of protein. When prepared properly, the adult Tettigar can be used to create a potent antivenin. During summer months, Tettigar are often heard 'singing' in the trees and reliably go silent just before a thunderstorm.
Eskri
Overpopulated ❖ Threat: Low-Mid
As small winged black bugs, Eskri are common littler creatures who are quite harmless. They buzz around most often in the evenings, and are much more prevalent around shallow bodies of water such as lakes or streams. They can bite, which often times leads to raised bumps and a red rash that will go away after a few days. Eskri are mostly nuisances in the lives of those living close to water, but if bitten too many times or by an Eskri carrying disease, an infection can occur. Typically, if this is the case, one can be treated by a healer or skilled medicinal person. Eskri have a very short life span of 2-4 weeks, so the incubation period for carrying a disease is fairly low, though can happen.
Chrysaetos are a breed of eagles found primarily in Thisbē. They are highly intelligent prey birds capable of understanding an enormous number of words and commands, rudimentary communication, and tool use. A cross-species plague wiped out most of their numbers early in the 4th Age, but have since been on a slow rise through the efforts of the southern realm and their tradition of Eagle Hunting. Though they have the capacity to be trained for a number of things, Chrysaetos birds are most frequently utilized as scouts in Thisbē’s military and in a long tradition of hunting games. Eagle Keeping is a very prestigious and lucrative career, but has been heavily monopolized by a few families. Chrysaetos are difficult to acquire through legal channels and exorbitantly priced on the Black Market.
Troll
Common ❖ Threat: High
A troll is a creature of both great strength and tremendous stupidity. Between terrible eyesight and very small brains, they possess a rudimentary knowledge of the world around them, but are generally unable to adapt or understand much else than their basic instincts. While stupid, trolls are easily agitated brutes which causes them to be immensely dangerous. They generally reach the height of twelve feet, and can weigh up to a ton. They engage in unpredictable behavior, especially when hungry or disturbed by a human or other intruder. Trolls typically keep well enough away from cities and larger settlements, thus making them more common remote areas, and have been known to make nests in mountain ranges that few would explore.
